益生菌(probiotics)科學為人類健康促進與保健的熱門研究範疇；益生菌藉由定殖於腸腔壁上以維持腸內正常菌叢平衡，避免病原菌過度滋生。益生菌亦具有降低血膽固醇、增進人體腸內與身體免疫作用以及降低癌症發生等功效。益菌素(prebiotics)則能助益益生菌生長，從而導出了結合益生菌、益菌素以及綜合上述二者功效的合益素(synbiotics)的概念。本課程教授學生有關益生菌對人體的健康與重要性的知識，使學生能認識該類菌種並將其應用於日常生活保健之中。
Probiotics are microorganisms beneficial to humans. They suppress the overgrowth of pathogens and maintain the balance of microbiota in intestines via colonization on the gut surface. Other reports include lowering of serum cholesterol, enhancement of gut and systemic immune responses, and reduction of cancer occurrence etc. Moreover, synbiotics are the combination of probiotics and prebiotics, with the benefits of prebiotics helpful to probiotics. Students will learn from this course about the efficacy of probiotics and prebiotics, and apply them in daily life health care.
