益生菌(probiotics)科學為近來有關人類健康促進與保健的熱門研究範疇之一;益生菌藉由定殖於大腸腸腔壁上以維持腸內正常菌叢平衡,避免病原菌過度滋生。益生菌亦具有降低血膽固醇、增進人體腸內與血液免疫作用以及降低癌症發生等功效;而益菌素(prebiotics)則能助益益生菌生長,從而導出了結合益生菌、益菌素以及綜合上述二者功效的合益素(synbiotics)概念。本課程教授學生有關益生菌對人體生理保健功效與重要性之觀念,使學生能認識該類菌種並將其應用於日常生活保健之中。
Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms to humans. They suppress the overgrowth of pathogens and maintain the balance of micrbiota in intestines via adherence to the gut epithelial mucosa. Other reports include lowering of serum cholesterol, enhancement of gut and systemic immune responses, and reduction of cancer occurrence etc. Moreover, synbiotics are the combination of probiotics and prebiotics, with the characteristics and function of prebiotics helpful to probiotics. Students will learn from this subject about the beneficial effects of probiotics and prebiotics, and apply them in daily life health care.
